Suspected Ebola cases in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo have now surpassed 900. WHO Chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that these figures include 101 confirmed cases, while Congolese authorities specified that there are 904 suspected cases and 119 suspected deaths.
The World Health Organization has stated that the outbreak poses a very high risk for Congo, although the risk of the disease spreading globally remains low.
Health workers say that the situation is exacerbated by chaos left by years of fighting and local government failures. These challenges have been further compounded by sweeping cuts to international aid budgets.
Ebola has killed more than 15,000 people across Africa in the past half-century.
