US Resumes Asylum Claims After Shooting Halt

The Trump administration will resume processing some asylum applications after temporarily halting all claims following a shooting involving National Guard members and an asylum seeker. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced the move on Monday.

The administration had paused reviewing applications for hundreds of thousands seeking refuge in the US, enacting a near-blanket halt to immigration paperwork. The Homeland Security Department has now lifted that total ban.

However, the pause remains in effect for approximately 40 countries. Processing will resume for asylum seekers originating from countries deemed “non-high-risk.”
