Egypt’s parliament has voted to authorize President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi to provide military support to Saudi Arabia. The decision comes as the kingdom faces ongoing strikes from Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen.
President al-Sisi stated that the support is focused on defending the land and borders of the kingdom. Egyptian officials have emphasized that the commitment of forces is for defensive purposes only, and Cairo has explicitly ruled out conducting strikes on Yemen.
These developments occur amid broader efforts to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East war. This includes a recent visit to Tehran by the Saudi defence minister, alongside Pakistan's army chief and Türkiye's intelligence chief.
