Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has stated that banning advanced Chinese AI models from use in the United States is not an effective solution for gaining an edge in the AI race. In an interview with the Financial Times, he argued that banning foreign open-source models would not be productive.
Zuckerberg advocated for more openness in the field, suggesting that developing AI in a tightly controlled manner can stifle innovation. In this context, he took aim at OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have pushed to tightly control AI development.
Furthermore, Zuckerberg warned against regulatory capture by American frontier labs that could stifle domestic competition. He also expressed that the current discourse regarding artificial intelligence is not optimistic enough.
