Alexander Zverev defeated British wildcard Arthur Fery 7-6(0) 6-2 6-4 on Friday to reach the Wimbledon final. The victory allows Zverev the opportunity to win back-to-back Grand Slam trophies following his first major title win at the French Open a month ago.
During a warm afternoon punctuated by wind, Zverev traded early breaks with Fery before winning the first-set tiebreak without dropping a point. Fery, who sought to become the second man to reach a major final as a wildcard after Goran Ivanisevic in 2001, struggled as the 29-year-old Zverev dialed up the intensity in the second set. Despite the support of the Centre Court crowd, Zverev used his serve and forehand to maintain control and clinical dominance.
With this win, Zverev becomes only the 13th man in the professional era since 1968 to reach all four Grand Slam finals. He will now battle either reigning Wimbledon champion Jannik Sinner or seven-time winner Novak Djokovic for the trophy.
