Two Jewish men, aged 76 and 34, were stabbed on Wednesday in Golders Green, a north-west London neighborhood with a large Jewish population. The victims were treated by emergency services at the scene and are reported to be in stable condition. A man was seen running along Golders Green Road armed with a knife and attempting to stab Jewish members of the public.
Police arrested a 45-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with the incident. Members of the volunteer security group Shomrim detained the suspect before police officers arrested him, during which police deployed a taser.
London police are treating the attack as a terrorist incident. This assault follows a recent spate of antisemitic hate crimes and arson attacks targeting synagogues and other Jewish community sites in north London.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack as appalling and deeply concerning. The British government has declared antisemitism in the U.K. an emergency, with the terrorism prevention adviser describing these attacks as the biggest national security emergency since 2017. While the government pledged funding to increase security around Jewish sites, members of the community have criticized the government following the string of attacks.
