US and Iran exchange strikes as ceasefire frays and peace talks stall

The United States and Iran traded renewed fire in the Persian Gulf on Wednesday in the most intense fighting in months. The flare-up of violence threatens a fragile ceasefire and comes at a time when diplomatic efforts and peace talks between the two nations remain stalled.

Iran launched a series of ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting Kuwait, Bahrain, and other regional targets. Many of these attacks were thwarted or failed, with missiles aimed at Kuwait falling apart en route and those aimed at Bahrain being intercepted. Kuwait’s army confirmed its air defenses intercepted the hostile attacks.

In response, US forces intercepted the Iranian missiles and drones and struck a command center in the Islamic Republic. Iranian media reports that the country is taking a stern approach based on longstanding mistrust and a history of US non-compliance.

The regional conflict has hardened into a stalemate as the US and Iran have failed to turn the fragile ceasefire into a lasting peace deal. Separately, Israel has continued strikes in Lebanon one day after a partial ceasefire was announced.
