A military strike in northeastern Nigeria has resulted in a significant number of civilian casualties. Reports indicate military jets struck a market in Yobe state on Saturday night while pursuing Islamist militants.
Initial reports suggest at least 100 people were killed, with some estimates reaching 200 feared dead, and many more injured. Amnesty International confirmed the deaths after speaking with survivors of the strike on the market in Jilli village. Officials have acknowledged a misfire occurred, stating the strike targeted a known terrorist enclave, but have not provided further details.
The village is located in an area that has been the epicenter of a jihadi insurgency for over a decade. Civilians have previously been caught in the crossfire during military operations against militants, a conflict that has been ongoing since 2009. The military has launched an investigation following reports of civilian casualties.
