Iran and Gulf states postpone talks on Strait of Hormuz

international relations

A planned meeting between Iran and several Gulf Arab nations to discuss the creation of a temporary shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed. Scheduled for September 14 in Oman, the meeting was delayed in the interests of consensus, according to Oman's foreign minister.

Iran stated that Saudi Arabia called off the high-level meeting. While Tehran and Muscat agreed to delay the dialogue to prioritize regional consensus, Iranian officials noted that the postponement deals a blow to efforts to reopen the strait. Talks are now expected tomorrow.

The delay highlights ongoing tensions with the Islamic Republic, as diplomacy to end the war with the United States has stalled. Meanwhile, Iranian-allied forces have advanced in Yemen, and Saudi Arabia faces threats from Iraqi militias and Iran-backed Houthi rebels, though Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei maintains that Iran does not interfere in Yemeni affairs.

Iran had originally planned to unveil an agreement on a temporary shipping lane, but has since indicated that any deal will not amount to a full reopening. Tehran intends to continue seeking a regionally backed bill while maintaining the authority to decide which ships can cross the strait.
