NJ Transit confirms $150 train fares for World Cup matches

New Jersey Transit and FIFA officials confirmed on Friday that round-trip public transit tickets from New York’s Penn Station to MetLife Stadium for this summer's World Cup matches will cost $150. This represents nearly a 12-fold increase from the typical round-trip fare of $12.90. MetLife Stadium is scheduled to host eight matches, including the final.

The price hike sparked an outcry from fans and led to a dispute between New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill and FIFA. Governor Sherrill criticized FIFA over the responsibility for the price increases, stating that taxpayers should not carry the burden of the costs. Initial reports indicated there would be no price reductions for children, seniors, or people with disabilities.

In addition to the fare hike, officials announced that regular commuter service from New York's Penn Station into New Jersey will be suspended for four hours before each match. These transport costs add to the financial burden on soccer fans attending World Cup matches at some U.S. venues this spring.
