Dutch rider Olav Kooij secured his first Tour de France stage victory on Wednesday. The 24-year-old debutant claimed the win on stage five during a bunch sprint finish.

The 158.3-km ride from Lannemezan to Pau ended in chaos after a late crash occurred a little more than five kilometres from the finish line. The accident fractured the peloton and slowed several riders in the closing kilometres.

Kooij, riding for Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale, crossed the line ahead of Germany's Max Kanter of XDS Astana. Belgium's Tim Merlier of Soudal-Quick Step finished in third place.
