Peruvians will head to the polls on June 7 for a presidential runoff between leftist candidate Roberto Sanchez and conservative Keiko Fujimori. The runoff follows a tumultuous first round of voting in April that saw long lines, delayed results, and accusations of fraud, with final results taking nearly a month to confirm.
According to an Ipsos poll released on Thursday, the candidates remain in a statistical tie. Sanchez, an ally of ousted and jailed former President Pedro Castillo, has recently moderated his messaging and secured 43.8% of the intended vote. Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, gained 43.2% support.
The election takes place amidst a climate of social tension, rising crime, and declining confidence in political institutions.
