China Executes Frenchman Convicted of Drug Trafficking

crime & law

A French national has been executed in China after being convicted of drug trafficking in 2010. The execution was confirmed by China on Sunday, stating it does not discriminate based on nationality in legal cases.

France’s Foreign Ministry announced the execution on Saturday, expressing “consternation” over the outcome. The executed man, Chan Thao Phoumy, was 62 years old and born in Laos, having spent over 15 years on death row.

France abolished the death penalty in 1981 by act of parliament. Paris has criticised the handling of the case by Chinese courts following the confirmation of the execution.
