A court in Bali has sentenced a 26-year-old Swiss tourist, Luzian Andrin Zgraggen, to one year in prison for insulting a sacred Hindu observance. Zgraggen was found guilty of violating Indonesia's new criminal code after posting offensive messages on Instagram regarding the Day of Silence.

The defendant flouted the sacred Hindu ritual by posting social media messages that denigrated the observance on the Indonesian resort island.

During his trial, Zgraggen told the court he had never intended to insult the Hindu holiday or the Balinese people. He expressed regret for his actions and apologized to the Balinese people.
