At least 19 people, including a seven-year-old girl, were killed and 25 others injured in a stampede during a major Hindu festival in the eastern Indian city of Kolkata. The incident occurred Saturday night at a Durga Puja festival in north Kolkata, located in India's West Bengal state.
Police stated that the stampede took place amid heavy rainfall and large crowds. Such deadly crowd incidents are frequent occurrences at Indian mass events and religious festivals, often resulting from safety lapses and poor management.
Authorities have detained the event's organizer and others involved. Police are currently launching a probe into crowd-control and safety lapses associated with the festival.
