Tens of thousands of people flocked to the British Museum's ticketing website on Wednesday morning as tickets went on sale for the first time to see the Bayeux Tapestry. High demand led to significant traffic, with some visitors facing online queues of up to nine hours and reports indicating that up to 80,000 people were waiting by mid-afternoon.
The historic wool-on-linen masterpiece will travel from France to go on display on UK soil for the first time.
The exhibition at the British Museum is set to run from September 2026 to July 2027.
