Israel expands operations, invasion in southern Lebanon

Israel has expanded its operations in southern Lebanon, renewing bombardments of Beirut’s southern suburbs and continuing air strikes across the south. One Lebanese soldier was killed and others wounded in an attack on an army checkpoint in the Tyre region.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the expansion aims to strengthen Israel’s security along its northern frontier, warning Hezbollah retains capabilities to fire rockets into Israel. Operations include the destruction of homes, raising fears of a long-term occupation.

Fighting, which began in early March, has resulted in 1,200 deaths in Lebanon. Mourners recently gathered for the funeral of three journalists killed while on duty.

Israeli forces continue to target the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group as troops advance towards the Litani River.
