Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has advanced to a November runoff election in her bid for a second term. While Bass came out ahead in Tuesday’s heated primary, she received less than 50% of the vote, meaning she must defend her seat in a general election.
Bass faces opposition from both ends of the political spectrum. She will take on either city council member Nithya Raman or former reality TV star Spencer Pratt in the one-on-one race. As of Tuesday evening, it remained unclear which of the two candidates would move on to face the incumbent.
This development marks a rare occurrence for the country's second-largest city, as no incumbent mayor has faced a runoff in more than two decades.
