Iraq’s parliament elected Nizar Amidi as president on Saturday, ending a five-month political deadlock following November’s parliamentary election which did not yield a clear majority.

The largely ceremonial role was secured by Amidi after receiving 227 votes.

Amidi, a Kurdish politician, has pledged “Iraq First” as he begins his term. The election of a president follows months of political maneuvering since the inconclusive parliamentary vote.
