Qatar's former emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, has died at the age of 74, the nation's top government body, the Amiri Diwan, announced on Sunday.
Sheikh Hamad ruled the energy-rich Gulf country from 1995, when he seized power, until 2013. In a break with tradition, he voluntarily abdicated the throne to his son, Sheikh Tamim, 18 years after taking office.
As a sweeping moderniser and key architect of the country's development, he masterminded Qatar's transformation from a quiet backwater and Bedouin background into an influential international crossroads and regional powerhouse in less than a generation.
Under his reign, Qatar experienced huge economic, social, and cultural changes. These efforts helped establish the nation as a global player in both investment and diplomacy.
