Thomas Tuchel’s England secured a place in the World Cup round of 16 after a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Three Lions narrowly avoided a humiliating last-32 exit against the lowly-ranked African qualifiers.
DR Congo threatened one of the greatest upsets in World Cup history when winger Brian Cipenga fired his side into a shock lead in the seventh minute. England trailed for more than an hour, while DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi produced a heroic display to keep the lead intact for much of the match.
Captain Harry Kane eventually rescued England with a late double, scoring in the 75th and 86th minutes to seal the win. The brace ensured England's qualification after surviving a major scare.
England will now face co-hosts Mexico in the round of 16. The clash is scheduled to take place in Mexico City on Sunday.
