France, Spain and Greece battle deadly wildfires amid heatwaves

environment natural disasters

Southern Europe is grappling with a brutal wildfire season as extreme heatwaves and strong winds fuel infernos across France, Spain, and Greece. These blazes have scorched forests, killed wildlife, and forced large-scale evacuations. Emergency crews have faced barely a pause between fire fronts, with a fourth heatwave now hitting Western Europe.

In France, massive wildfires in the southwest, including one four times the size of Paris, have led to what may be the country's largest peacetime evacuation, with 4,000 additional people ordered to leave sites along the Atlantic coast. While some progress was made near Bordeaux, authorities fear shifting winds and temperatures expected to hit the low 40s could set back containment efforts. In Spain, the state of emergency near Madrid was lifted, and over 63,000 evacuees from areas including Avila province were cleared to return home as firefighters gained ground.

The wildfire threat has shifted east toward Greece, where blazes on Crete, Lesbos, Paros, and the Peloponnese have forced thousands of residents and tourists to evacuate. Three Greek firefighters have died and two others were injured. On Crete, over 220 firefighters are battling flames while strong winds hamper aerial water drops. Similar struggles continue in Portugal and Turkey as firefighting efforts persist.

Scientists warn that human-caused climate change is driving these extreme conditions. Recent studies indicate that the weather fueling fires in southwestern France was twice as likely and conditions in central Spain 20 times more likely due to global warming. Research shows the likelihood of wildfires in southern Europe has doubled since 1981, with Portugal, Spain, France, Italy, and Greece experiencing more fire-promoting weather.
