Microsoft and OpenAI have agreed to end the software giant's exclusive right to sell the startup's artificial intelligence models and products. This change marks a turning point in one of the AI boom's highest-profile partnerships.
The new arrangement allows OpenAI to sell its technology across any cloud provider, opening the door for the ChatGPT maker to pursue deals with rivals such as Amazon and Google.
Microsoft, which remains OpenAI's biggest financial partner, will continue to license the technology but will no longer be its exclusive licensee. Additionally, Microsoft stated on Monday that it will no longer pay a share of its revenue to OpenAI.
These shifts follow changes since Microsoft and OpenAI announced a broad agreement after the startup's restructuring in October.
