Pogacar set to equal Tour de France record as Carapaz wins Queen stage

sports athletics

Ecuador's Richard Carapaz won the Tour de France's final mountain stage on Saturday, riding clear to victory in Alpe d'Huez. The dramatic stage 20 win came after American Sepp Kuss crashed twice in the closing kilometres.

Race leader Tadej Pogacar safely negotiated the penultimate stage and is all but certain to claim a fifth Tour de France title on Sunday. The Slovenian is poised to win a record-equalling crown when the showcase race ends with its final stage.

At 27 years old, Pogacar will become one of the few riders to have won the Tour five times and the youngest to have done so. With the victory all but wrapped up, he is set to join cycling's all-time greats.
