Iowa voters cast their ballots in Tuesday's primaries, following months of campaigning ahead of the November midterms. While the state has been dominated by the GOP for the last decade, Democrats believe they can be competitive in the Senate election, the race for governor, and three of the state's four House races.

In the contest for the open U.S. Senate seat left by Republican Sen. Joni Ernst, who is not seeking reelection, state Rep. Josh Turek has won the Democratic nomination. Turek, an establishment Democrat, defeated state Sen. Zach Wahls in a primary that could be critical to Democratic efforts to regain power in Congress. Turek will face Republican U.S. Rep. Ashley Hinson in November.

The race to replace retiring Republican governor Kim Reynolds also continues. Democratic state Auditor Rob Sand will move on to the general election. As Republicans continue to count votes, businessman Zach Lahn also moves forward to November.
