France is celebrating its national holiday today, commemorating the taking of the Bastille in 1789 that kickstarted the French Revolution. This year's Bastille Day celebrations focus on European unity, France's rearmaments, and support for Ukraine as it fends off Russia's full-scale invasion, which is now well into its fifth year.
The annual military parade on the Champs Elysees features a showcase of support for Kyiv, including aircraft from 11 European countries and approximately 500 troops from the Coalition of the Willing. These allies, who have pledged to assist with Ukraine's post-war security, include Ukrainian troops and co-pilots. France described the presence of these forces as a symbol of Europe's strategic awakening.
The event also marks President Emmanuel Macron's final Bastille Day in his role as president. While tens of thousands of people are expected to attend the celebrations in central Paris, the festivities come amid a scorching heatwave. This weather has caused a forest blaze to rage outside the capital and led to fireworks being banned in many parts of the country.
