Serena Williams returned to the U.S. Open for her first match at the Grand Slam tournament since 2022. Williams, often considered the best women's tennis player in history, was among the star double-acts in New York as the mixed doubles competition began on Tuesday.

Partnering with Spain's seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Carlos Alcaraz, Williams rebounded from a slow start to defeat Erin Routliffe and Lloyd Glasspool in the first round. However, the pair eventually fell to Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli.

Meanwhile, Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic will have to hope to win another U.S. Open singles title.
