North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles off its east coast on Monday, according to South Korea’s military. The projectiles were launched from an area around the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, prompting Seoul to increase surveillance.
Japan confirmed at least one suspected ballistic missile, and it is believed that at least two of the weapons fell into waters outside Japan's exclusive economic zone. This latest weapons test adds to a recent streak of demonstrations by North Korea.
The launches occur amid rising tensions between the two Koreas. Relations have been high since last month when two landmines detonated in the DMZ, injuring three South Korean soldiers.
