US President Donald Trump announced via Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire. According to the announcement, both parties have agreed to stop targeting oil refineries, power plants, and other energy infrastructure. The announcement follows Trump's criticism of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for attacks on Russian refineries, which the US president linked to high diesel prices in the United States.
President Zelenskyy expressed surprise at the announcement, stating the deal was news to him and that he is awaiting further details from Washington. While calling the announcement good news for everyone, Zelenskyy noted that Russia continues to hit energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv. He stated that Ukraine supports de-escalation and the protection of lives, but maintained that Moscow must stop its attacks on the Ukrainian energy grid for the ceasefire to be effective.
Zelenskyy said he has discussed the possibility of an energy ceasefire with the leaders of Canada and Finland, as well as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. The Ukrainian leader had previously pushed for a full 60-day ceasefire. In related tensions, Trump suggested that Ukraine needs a new president after Zelenskyy criticized a US deal easing sanctions on Russian fuel exports.
Russia has not yet commented on or confirmed the agreement. Despite the US president's claim that the ceasefire is effective immediately, Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drones have continued to target Ukrainian skies.
