A fire broke out on the Mutiara Sentosa 2 ferry in waters off Madura island. The vessel was sailing eastwards from Indonesia's second-largest city of Surabaya in East Java to the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi.
The ship was carrying 271 passengers and crew members when the blaze occurred. Authorities have reported that at least five people were killed, while 41 others remain unaccounted for.
Search and rescue officials report that 225 people were rescued, with some passengers jumping into the sea to escape the fire. The cause of the blaze remains unclear.
