The U.S. government has offered a $25 million reward for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Juan Carlos González, also known as Pelón. González has emerged as the figurehead of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, which is Mexico's most powerful cartel.
Prosecutors state that González took over the cartel after El Mencho was killed by the Mexican military. González is the stepson of the former leader.
This action is part of a strategy by the Trump administration to weaken the leadership of high-profile Mexican cartels by increasing bounties. During this administration, $100 million in rewards has been offered for various leaders of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
