French police have opened a murder investigation after the remains of five newborns were discovered in an apartment in the southern French city of Orange. The discovery, made late Monday, included bones and a decomposing body found in cardboard boxes at the home of a couple.
The remains were found after the woman's partner searched the flat following the home birth of a healthy baby. Hospital staff subsequently alerted prosecutors to the situation.
A forensic doctor stated that the remains likely belonged to five newborns, with further autopsies pending.
