Embattled FIFA President Gianni Infantino to stand for re-election

FIFA President Gianni Infantino intends to seek a fourth and final term in next year's election. A spokesperson for the global soccer body confirmed on Sunday that the 56-year-old Swiss leader remains committed to standing for re-election. If successful, Infantino will continue to serve as head of world football until 2031.

The announcement comes amid severe pressure and widespread calls for Infantino to resign. The controversy stems from a now-shelved and botched plan to sell stakes in FIFA competitions, including the World Cup, to private investors.

When asked about his future by reporters at the Women’s Under-20 World Cup in Poland, Infantino remained tight-lipped and refused to answer questions. The next presidential election is scheduled to take place at the 77th FIFA Congress on Thursday, March 18, 2027, in Rabat, Morocco. Currently, no one has formally announced a candidacy to challenge Infantino in the election.
