Lebanon Expels Iranian Ambassador, Tensions Rise With Hezbollah

international relations

Lebanon has taken diplomatic action against Iran, declaring its ambassador to Beirut persona non grata and ordering his departure by the end of the week. The Foreign Ministry also summoned the Iranian envoy, citing breaches of diplomatic protocol. This decision has raised concerns about potential internal instability within Lebanon.

Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed group, strongly condemned the move, accusing the Lebanese government of seeking to place the country under “American-Israeli tutelage” following the withdrawal of the ambassador’s accreditation. The group also criticized the withdrawal itself.

Reports indicate Lebanon’s prime minister believes the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is commanding Hezbollah, a view shared by analysts who suggest Iran maintains significant control over the militant and political organization.

Meanwhile, Israel has confirmed plans to occupy a ‘security zone’ in southern Lebanon, extending to the Litani River.
