The U.S. Senate on Wednesday rejected a resolution directing President Donald Trump to remove U.S. forces from the conflict in Iran. The measure, proposed by Democratic Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon, represented the seventh attempt by Democrats to force an end to American involvement in the war or limit the president's ability to use military force until authorized by Congress.

The resolution failed in a 49-50 vote. All Democrats supported the advancement of the bill with the exception of John Fetterman of Pennsylvania. While Senate Republicans blocked the effort, the vote showed growing cracks in Republican support for the war.

The measure edged closer to passage as three Republicans, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, and Susan Collins, voted in favor. The inclusion of a third Republican senator indicates that the ranks of those opposed to the strategy are growing.
