Two Tennessee National Guard soldiers fatally shot 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson in downtown Memphis on Sunday morning. The shooting occurred around 4 a.m. as the soldiers responded to a report of gunfire and engaged in a pursuit.
The soldiers were patrolling as part of a high-profile anti-crime task force created and backed by President Donald Trump, an initiative the president has touted as a success.
Authorities state that Johnson turned and pulled a gun on the troops during the chase. A state investigation is now underway. Mayor Paul Young called the shooting an unfortunate incident and said he is waiting for the results of the TBI investigation before commenting further.
