U.S.-bound flight diverted to Montreal over Congolese passenger amid Ebola fears

An Air France flight traveling from Paris to Detroit, Michigan, was diverted to Montreal, Canada, on Wednesday night. United States authorities barred the aircraft from entering the U.S. due to travel restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak.

The redirection occurred after it was determined that a passenger from the Democratic Republic of Congo had boarded the plane in error. According to a spokesperson for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agency, the passenger should not have boarded the flight due to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the virus.

The U.S. has closed its borders to recent visitors to the Democratic Republic of Congo and other East African countries where a deadly Ebola outbreak has taken hold. These measures were implemented to limit the risk of the virus entering the country.
