Israel has intensified air strikes across southern and eastern Lebanon, including the Bekaa Valley, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to crush Hezbollah. Following this announcement, the Israeli military reported striking more than 70 Hezbollah sites in a single day. These escalations come despite a ceasefire agreed upon last month and recently extended.
Recent strikes have resulted in multiple casualties. A raid in Sir al-Gharbiyeh on Saturday killed 11 people, including six women and a child, and wounded nine others, including four children. Additional weekend strikes in southern Lebanon killed two people, while dozens of other strikes killed at least three people.
Prime Minister Netanyahu stated the military is developing countermeasures as Hezbollah has been targeting Israel and its forces in southern Lebanon and northern Israel with fiber optic drones. Meanwhile, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem has rejected talks with Israel and opposed disarmament, calling for protests against the Lebanese government, which drew condemnation from the United States.
These developments occur amid deepening fears of a wider regional conflict, even as the United States and Iran conduct talks in Doha. These negotiations are intended to establish terms for a broader Middle East peace deal and bring an end to the conflict in the region.
