Donald Trump is seeking approval from local officials in Florida to transform his Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach into a permanently-designated presidential retreat. The 80-year-old billionaire told reporters in the Oval Office on Wednesday that US security officials had suggested the plan to create a sanctuary for his successors, which he described as being similar to Camp David.
According to a letter from the club’s attorney, the proposal would designate the facility as the permanent United States Presidential Golf Course. The retreat would be intended for use by all past, current, and future presidents and would host world leaders and summits.
The plan calls for the federal government to be granted part of the property, while the rest of the land would be maintained as a private course. This proposal is part of a broader series of efforts by Trump to use his name to memorialize his legacy.
It is not yet clear how much the project would cost or what the resulting benefit to taxpayers would be.
