President Donald Trump posted a map on Truth Social without explanation showing the United States, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Mexico, and the Caribbean colored with the US flag. The entire landmass in the image was labelled "United States of America."
Iceland summoned the U.S. ambassador on Monday in response to the social media post. The country is reacting forcefully to the image, viewing it as a slight against its sovereignty after having previously voted against talks to join the European Union.
The relationship between Washington and Iceland has been tested by previous Greenland threats and a trade dispute involving Canada, alongside the publication of the map placing Iceland within US borders.
