North Korea rapidly boosting nuclear weapons capacity

North Korea has made “very serious” progress in its ability to produce nuclear weapons, according to the head of the UN’s nuclear watchdog. The agency has observed a rapid increase in operations at the Yongbyon reactor, indicating a significant boost in the country’s nuclear capabilities.

The regime, which first tested a nuclear weapon in 2006, is currently thought to have assembled around 50 warheads. Questions remain regarding the ability to miniaturize these weapons for use on long-range missiles.

While under numerous UN sanctions for its prohibited weapons programs, North Korea appears to be focused on bolstering its nuclear arsenal. The agency has not found evidence suggesting assistance from Russia in the country’s nuclear development.
