First direct US-Venezuela commercial flight lands in Caracas after 7 years

The first direct commercial flight between the United States and Venezuela arrived in Caracas on Thursday. This event marks the resumption of nonstop commercial service between the two countries after a seven-year hiatus.

The flights had been previously banned by President Donald Trump during his first term, following an indefinite suspension ordered by the U.S. Homeland Security Department citing security concerns.

American Airlines Group Inc. resumed the flights as President Trump pushes to restore commercial and diplomatic ties. This move follows the capture and abduction of President Nicolás Maduro during a nighttime raid on his residence in Caracas in early January.

The diplomatic thaw is expected to increase the United States business presence in the South American nation.
