At least 31 people died and dozens more were injured after an overcrowded bus plunged into a ravine in Ethiopia's northern Amhara region on Monday. The vehicle was traveling from the Dessie area to the capital, Addis Ababa, when it veered off the road.
Emergency response efforts were delayed because the area lacks basic infrastructure and ambulance services, forcing passengers to be transported in public vehicles. The crash occurred on a road that winds through hilly terrain and is widely known as hazardous. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Ethiopia is considered one of the worst countries in the world for road traffic accidents and has notoriously dangerous roads. A similar bus crash into a river in the southern Sidama region in December 2024 left 66 people dead.
