US Secret Service shoots armed man near White House; teen bystander wounded

An individual was shot by law enforcement on Monday near the Washington Monument, around 15th Street and Independence Avenue. Secret Service agents and plainclothes officers spotted a man carrying a gun in the vicinity of the White House, who then opened fire on them before being shot and wounded.

The incident triggered a brief lockdown of the White House as authorities investigated. Journalists outside were ushered into the briefing room, while President Donald Trump continued a small business event without interruption. The shooting occurred shortly after a motorcade carrying Vice President JD Vance passed by the area, though officials stated the vice president was not believed to be a target.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and transported an adult male to the hospital. His condition and the circumstances surrounding the shooting were not immediately known. Personnel also treated a teenage male for minor injuries.

The shooting drew a large police presence to the area. This incident follows a previous event just over a week prior, in which a man named Cole Tomas Allen was charged after attempting to storm the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner with guns and knives, an attack that wounded a Secret Service officer.
