Uganda's army chief, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has ordered the shutdown of the Nation Media Group, one of the country's main independent media organizations. The order mandates that the group's television station, NTV Uganda, and the Daily Monitor newspaper remain closed until further notice.

Kainerugaba, the son of long-serving President Yoweri Museveni, issued the order after accusing the media group of biased reporting. In a series of posts on X, he explicitly stated that he does not believe in a free press.

Military personnel were deployed to the media offices following the announcement. President Museveni has held his grip on power for decades.
