Benin heads to the polls this Sunday to elect a successor to President Patrice Talon, who is stepping down after ten years in office. The election feels largely predetermined, with the country’s long-serving finance minister, Romuald Wadagni, widely expected to win.
Wadagni is the clear favourite, having received the endorsement of outgoing President Talon. His only rival, Paul Hounkpe, is significantly less known to voters. The anticipated victory is supported by Benin’s strong economic growth under Talon’s leadership.
However, the new leader will face significant challenges, including growing security concerns related to jihadist activity in the north and harsh economic conditions. The election follows a failed coup attempt just four months prior, adding to the complexities facing the nation.
