Blue Origin New Glenn rocket grounded after launching satellite into wrong orbit

science astronomy space programs

Blue Origin successfully launched its New Glenn rocket and landed its booster stage, but the mission resulted in a failure as a satellite from customer AST SpaceMobile was deployed into an incorrect orbit. While the satellite separated from the second stage, it entered an off-nominal orbit that is too low to be useful.

Although the launch appeared to go off without a hitch, a problem prevented the rocket's upper stage from putting its payload into the correct orbit. Blue Origin is blaming a bad engine for the failure, which has doomed the satellite.

The firm founded by Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos is currently investigating the incident. This first major failure of the new heavy-launch system could create delays to the company's ambition to help NASA and the Trump administration return to the Moon.
