A massive fire at the Rong Beer Na Lat Phrao bar in Bangkok's Chatuchak district killed at least 27 people and injured dozens early Monday, July 13. The blaze is one of Thailand's worst in recent history and the deadliest since 2009. Reports indicate that more than 70 people were injured, with 45 still missing and some victims in critical condition.
Preliminary investigations indicate the fire may have been started by an electrical short circuit, potentially in an air conditioner located in the ceiling. A musician who was performing during the incident reported seeing smoke coming out of a circuit breaker before hearing an explosion. The venue has a total capacity of more than 300 people and features a stage, two bars, and a kitchen.
Authorities are currently investigating possible negligence, specifically whether emergency exits were obstructed. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt told reporters that investigators are examining ceiling materials and possible obstructions that may have hindered evacuation, noting that several victims were found near a fire exit. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul added that many victims were found in the restrooms at the back of the venue.
Thai national police reported that the fire was brought under control around 2:00 am Monday. One survivor described narrowly escaping the blaze by seconds after stepping outside for a smoke.
