Iran to boycott US World Cup games but stay in tournament
Iran’s football federation president, Mehdi Taj, stated the nation will participate in the World Cup despite a planned “boycott” of the United States. This follows concerns regarding their scheduled group matches in the US this summer. Taj confirmed preparations for the tournament are underway, while also addressing earlier reports of seeking a venue change. The federation had previously been “negotiating” with Fifa to potentially move its games to Mexico. Participation had been questioned since escalating conflict between Iran and the United States began in February. Iran is currently scheduled to play all three of its FIFA World Cup 2026 group games in the US, with Mexico presented as an alternative location.
