Twenty-five people were killed and approximately 100 others were injured following violent clashes at a prison in Negombo, Sri Lanka. The fighting, which began on Sunday and continued into Monday, broke out between different prison populations, including convicted prisoners and those under detention, specifically inmates from two drug gangs.

The facility is located in the coastal town of Negombo, about 35 kilometers north of the commercial capital city of Colombo. The wounded were rushed to the Negombo hospital for treatment following the overnight disputes.

Police sources stated that areas within the prison are still being cleared as officials work to account for the dead and injured. While the military has been requested to provide support, they currently remain on standby. Heavy police deployment was observed outside the prison gates as buses transported injured inmates from the premises. The trigger for the clashes was not immediately known.
